Beginning in 2008, the Indian Premier League, better known as IPL, has been a grand success in the Cricket fraternity, changing the trajectory of franchise Cricket in the past two decades. Whereas International Cricket received the primary spotlight earlier, following the introduction of IPL to the Cricket world, the power dimension shifted more towards franchise Cricket. Seeing the prosperity of IPL, several cricket-playing nations launched their T20 Cricket leagues, with BBL, BPL, PSL, and CPL to name a few.


To make the two-month-long T20 league exhilarating, IPL has several ways to acknowledge the premier players of a particular season. From the most impressive batter, most wicket-taker, and promising emerging player to the optimal fielder of the season, the league has a prize for each leading performer. The leading run-scorer of a season is awarded with an Orange Cap. Top batters from all over the were crowned with the prestigious cap for leading the batting scoreboard at the end of a season. #16 IPL 2023: Shubhman Gill (890 Runs)

Regarded as the ‘next big thing’ of Indian Cricket, Shubhman Gill demonstrated a glimpse of his talent in IPL 2023, winning the Orange Cap and entrenching his name as the highest run-getter of the season. Playing for Gujrat Titans, Gill featured in all 17 matches, including the mega final against Chennai Super Kings, where his team fell short. The Prince amassed a total of 890 runs at an average of 59. Apart from 4 half-centuries, he scored 3 tons.

#15 IPL 2022: Jos Butler (863 Runs)

England’s Jos Butler, who plays for Rajasthan Royals in IPL, relished a sensational season in 2022. The star English keeper led the Royals to the finals before getting defeated by the Gujrat Titans. With an impressive tally of 863 runs, Butler walked away with the orange cap, scoring four half-centuries and the same number of centuries in that season.

#14 IPL 2021: Ruturaj Gaikwad (635 Runs)

Ruturaj Gaikwad rose as the ‘Emerging Player of the Season’ in 2021, making it a career-changing year for him. The CSK opener steered his team to a title triumph season with his back-to-back remarkable performances that season. At an average of 45, Ruturaj scored 635 runs in the fourteenth season of IPL. Besides scoring his maiden IPL ton, he accumulated four half-centuries.

#13 IPL 2020: KL Rahul (670 Runs)

Hit by the pandemic, many sporting events around the world were affected, including IPL. Instead of the usual March-April window, the event commenced at the end of the year. Beating Delhi Capitals in the final, Mumbai Indians
clinched the title. Despite the shortcomings of Kings Eleven Punjab, KL Rahul was a stellar performer with the bat, ending the season with the Orange Cap. The star Indian batter scored 670 runs at an average of 55.

#12 IPL 2019: David Warner (692 Runs)

David Warner is a proficient campaigner in IPL, featuring in the cash-rich league since 2009. After initially representing the Delhi franchise, previously known as Delhi Daredevils, he starred for Sunrisers Hyderabad before returning to Delhi’s team, now known as Delhi Capitals. While representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019, he had an incredible tenure as the Orange Cap winner. The Aussie Southpaw ended the season scoring 692 runs.

#11 IPL 2018: Kane Williamson (735 Runs)

Kane Williamson, another star performer from Sunrisers Hyderabad, shone with his bat in 2018. Getting 735 runs with the bat, the Kiwi batsman mentored the Hyderabad franchise to the Final, where his team came up short against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. In that season, Williamson maintained an average of 52, while recording 8 half centuries.

#10 IPL 2017: David Warner (641 Runs)

David Warner had another prolific season in 2017 representing Sunrisers Hyderabad. Even though the Hyderabad team did not qualify for the final, Warner was the standout performer as a batsman. Scoring at an average the southpaw amassed 641 runs on the board to win the orange cap. The season witnessed a nail-biting final between Rising Pune Supergiants and Mumbai Indians.

#9 IPL 2016: Virat Kohli (973 Runs)

While Virat Kohli featured in every season of the Indian Premier League, 2016 was the year he was in sublime touch, securing his first and only orange cap. King Kohli scored a total of 973 runs that season at an astounding average of 81. Moreover, the superstar Indian batter scored those runs, keeping a strike rate of over 150 and racking up 4 centuries. His tally is 973 runs is still the most number of runs scored by a batsman in a single season. Despite his heroic endeavors, Royal Challengers Bangaluru concluded the season as the runner-up against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

#8 IPL 2015: David Warner (562 Runs)

David Warner headlined the chart of IPL orange cap winners for the first time in 2015. The former Sunrisers Hyderabad opener gathered 562 runs in the eighth season of the Indian Premier League, scoring 562 runs with an impressive strike rate of 156. Warner has the honor of clinching the maximum number of orange caps, winning it three times up to this point.

#7 IPL 2014: Robin Utthapa (660 Runs)

Robin Uthhapa, the former batting luminary of Kolkata Knight Riders, was on a roll in 2014, taking the Kolkata franchise to title triumph. He was a cornerstone of Knight Rider’s top order by giving steady starts consistently. The right-handed batsman led the IPL batting chart that season accumulating 660 runs at an average of 44. Even though he didn’t score a ton, he had five impactful half-centuries to his name.

#6 IPL 2013: Michael Hussey (733 Runs)

Chennai Super Kings, the five-time IPL Champion, finished off IPL 2013 as a runner-up, losing to Mumbai Indians in the Final. The former Australian and CSK southpaw Michael Hussey’s dependability in the top order stormed the yellow brigade to the final. In the star-studded CSK squad, Michael Hussey shone by scoring 733 runs and taking home the orange cap. Additionally, Hussey kept an impressive average of 52 that season.

#5 IPL 2012: Chris Gayle (733 Runs)

Chris Gayle was the Caribbean Destroyer in his prime, renowned for dismantling opponents with the bat. From mammoth sixes to powerful boundaries, when Gayle Storm was on fire, he was unstoppable. Gayle topped the list of batters in 2012 with a tally of 733 runs. The aggressive southpaw maintained a strike rate of 160.

#4 IPL 2011: Chris Gayle (608 Runs)

The first Gayle storm had arrived on the fourth edition of IPL. The newly signed Gayle for Royal Challengers Bangalore announced his arrival to IPL in style by scoring a quick-fire ton to annihilate Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowlers. Surprisingly, he remained unsold in the IPL Auction 2011. Leaving an impression that year, Gayle scored 608 runs at a staggering strike rate of 183, the most among all IPL orange cap winners in history.

#3 IPL 2010: Sachin Tendulkar (618 Runs)

Every major run-scoring list of International Cricket consists of one common name, Sachin Tendulkar. The God of Cricket featured in IPL for Mumbai Indians in its preliminary days, playing six seasons until retirement in 2013. IPL 2010 was the best season of his career when he was awarded the Orange Cup winner for scoring the most number of runs. Tendulkar made 618 runs with a remarkable average of 47.

#2 IPL 2009: Matthew Hayden (572 Runs)

Matthew Hayden was one of the greatest hitters of Cricket ball during his playing days, and he justified his reputation in IPL with a superb tenure in 2009. The stylish left-hander featured in CSK’s team. With five half-centuries and an average of 52, the Aussie lad amassed a total of 572 runs in IPL 2, making him the orange cap holder.

#1 Shaun Marsh (616 Runs)

The first edition of the Indian Premier League was a grand success, paving the way for franchise Cricket. While the late Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals won their only IPL crown in the inaugural event, King’s Eleven Punjab’s Shaun Marsh topped the orange cap chart with 616 runs. The former Australian batsman scored those runs at an outstanding average of 68, and his tally of runs included five fifties and one hundred.
