Tag Team Excellence: 11 Legendary Duos in WWE History

Tag Team wrestling demonstrates coordination, trust,  impeccable bonding, and chemistry between two wrestlers, making it an exciting division to look forward to. Even though tag team wrestlers don’t get main event-level exposure, it’s an ideal division to gradually build a character, and winning the WWE Tag Team Championship is a huge honor for any Superstar.

Many legendary wrestlers embarked on their careers in WWE with a tag team. After building momentum and a strong character,  they would go on to have a singles career. Edge,  Roman Reigns,  Seth Rollins,  Jeff Hardy, etc are some prominent names who began their careers with a tag team. 

WWE Tag Team Championships have been around for decades, with many noteworthy tag teams capturing the coveted golds.  These are some of the greatest legendary tag teams in WWE history.  

#11 The Bar 

The Bar was a tag team consisting of former WWE Champion Sheamus and Cesaro. They formed the tag team in 2016, emerging as a force to be reckoned with in the division. Sheamus’s experience met with Cesaro’s superhuman strength to make them a formidable duo.  

Their association lasted three years,  with the tag team getting disbanded in 2019 due to The Celtic Warrior’s injury and the Swiss Superman’s draft to a different brand. They were five-time WWE Tag Team Champions, having won the RAW Tag Team Titles a record four times and the SmackDown Tag Team Titles once.  

#10 The Shield 

The Shield would be placed among legendary tag teams in WWE , but they were equally effective as a tag team, considering they had the chemistry and understanding to succeed in the tag team division. Before their push as mainevent stars, The Shield was the most feared stable in the roster,  with the stable members winning tag team titles. 

The Shield became the WWE Tag Team Champions three times. While the duo of Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins won the tag team golds once, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose won it twice. 

 

#9 The New Age Outlaws ( Billy Gunn & Road Dogg)

The Attitude Era had some enormous wrestling personalities who captivated the fans with their charisma, mic ability, and ring dexterity. The New Age Outlaws, consisting of mainly Road Dogg and Billy Gunn, were plausibly the most over tag team of the era.  In terms of merchandise sales, they were just behind Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock.  

The New Age Outlaws are a six-time WWE Tag Team Champions, with most of their title reigns coming in the Attitude Era.  Pro-Wrestling Illustrated voted them the Tag Team of the Year in 1998. 

#8 The Road Warriors 

The Road Warriors were the lodestars of tag team division’s popularity in the 1980s.  With face paints and distinctive ring gears, the duo of The Road Warriors were one of the legendary tag teams in WWE back in the day.

The dynamic tag team was also known as the Legion of Doom. Inspired by Mad Max’s The Road Warrior movie, they were the first batch of wrestlers to bring gimmicks into the ring based on movie characters. They became WWE Tag Team Champions twice.  

#7 Edge & Christian 

Edge and Christian had stupendous singles careers in WWE, especially the former,  who was a record eleven-time world champion.  Christian,  on the other hand, was a WWE Grand Slam Champion, with two World Championships to his record book.  

However,  they started as a tag team in the Attitude Era.  The duo were one of the legendary tag teams in WWE from 1998 to 2001, competing in many astounding matches. Edge and Christian won the prestigious double belts seven times together.  

#6 The Hart Foundation 

The Hart Foundation included two prime members of the Hart Family.  They were one of the known WWE tag teams from the 1980s, with their tenure starting in 1985 and ending in 1991. Hart’s family’s most recognized face in professional wrestling,  Bret Hart, and his brother-in-law,  Jim Neidhart were the tag team partners. They were managed by Jimmy Hart, who wasn’t related to the Hart family in real life.  

As family members,  Jim and Bret shared an inconceivable chemistry. While Bret was the technical master in the ring,  Jim was the powerhouse, making them stand-out among the legendary tag teams in WWE, and they won the twin titles two times.  

#5 The Brothers Of Destruction 

When the two most feared men of the wrestling ring form a tag team, they are guaranteed to be a deadly combination.  This is what happened when The Undertaker teamed up with kayfabe brother Kane to create The Brothers of Destruction.  

Their size, sheer strength, in-ring understanding, and aura made them an indomitable tag team. The Brothers of Destruction worked together in the Attitude Era and Ruthless Aggression Era, winning the Tag Team Titles three times.  

#4 The Dudley Boyz

The Dudley Boyz played a crucial role in uplifting the stature of the WWE Tag Team Championship in the Attitude Era.  Similar to Brothers of Destruction,  Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley were kayfabe brothers, and their unerring chemistry turned them into a top-notch tag team.

The Dudley Boyz are a ten-time Tag Team Champions in WWE,  which shows their consistency and effectiveness as a duo.  

#3 The Hardy Boyz 

The Hardy Boyz was another tag team to successfully transition from the tag team to singles stars. Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy,  the real-life brothers,  started as a tag team in the Attitude Era. The duo drew attention with their high-flying wrestling, which wasn’t a familiar sight in WWE in the late 1990s.  

 Jeff and Matt were part of many historical ladder matches during their early days as a tag team. Not just the Attitude Era, they dominated the wrestling fraternity in the Ruthless Aggression Era following a reunion. As nine-time WWE Tag Team Champions, their legacy has been cemented as one of the legendary tag teams in WWE history.

#2 The Usos 

The Usos are one of the most accomplished tag teams in WWE history, even before their addition to The Bloodline. The twin brothers and the sons of Rikishi were together from the beginning of their WWE main roster careers in 2010. Together, they have made a command in the tag team division for over a decade.  

Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso are an eight-time WWE Tag Team Champions. Even though they have gone their separate ways now.  

#1 The New Day

Three random wrestlers, who were struggling without a proper direction in 2014, were put together to build a new tag team called The New Day.  The erratic decision from WWE paid off as The New eventually ended up being one of legendary tag teams in WWE of all time.  

Their wit, charisma, and mic work were the biggest takeaways from their success. At one point, New Day’s popularity soared to give mainstream attention, making the group one of the top merchandise sellers of the company. The New Day are eleven-time Tag Team Champions and even one-time NXT Tag Team Champion.
